W. Edwards Deming

William Edwards Deming inspires me for his application of what I personally refer to as “controlled common sense” through the use of his model - the Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle.

Notably, Deming was involved in planning the Japanese Census in 1951, delivering lectures on his philosophies of Total Quality Management. The application of Deming’s philosophies is regarded as one of the main catalysts for the recovery and growth of Japan’s post-war economy.

A bad system will beat a good person every time

These philosophies were so highly commended that the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers founded the Deming Prize, which is one of the highest awards in Total Quality Management. For those interested, the award was named after Deming as a thank you for his influence on Japan’s manufacturing industries, after Deming declined to receive royalties for his lecture transcripts.
